Post-Apocalyptic Fiction by N.C. Reed
The world has stopped turning. Well, most things in the world have stopped turning, anyway. Clay Sanders, his friends and his family thought they were prepared for the immense Coronal Mass Ejection that literally turned off the lights in most of the world, turning First World nations into pre-industrial nations in a matter of hours. No more phones, television, motor vehicles, radios, or GPS. The United States has gone from following the most popular celebrities on social media and worrying about the latest fashions to simply trying to survive. The winter has been relatively quiet for the Sanders clan and their new neighbors, and they have used that time to firm up their plans and their position. They are confident now that they are on the right track. Gordy Sanders and his friends have trained all winter long under brutal conditions to join the former commandos of Clay’s old army unit and are now ready to test their skills. Their first outing finds them in a fight against apparent raiders molesting a small family a few miles from the ranch. But there are much bigger problems on the horizon that will make that trial look immaterial in comparison. Things are about to heat up around the Sanders ranch, and winter hasn’t even officially ended yet!
The seas can be a dangerous place. Secrets are kept. Lies are told. And like Las Vegas, often what happens there, stays there.
Alone on the Atlantic Ocean, three days out from Boston Harbor and the coastline of America, the MV CALEB may be transporting a very dangerous cargo to the United States. Brice Bannon, along with his friends Tarakesh “Blades” Sardana and Skyjack McMurphy, must confirm the existence of the threat, and then neutralize it by any means necessary.

In the Breakers series, humanity faces not one apocalypse, but two: first a lethal pandemic, then a war against those who made the virus. This collection includes the first three books and is over 1000 pages (350,000 words) of post-apocalyptic survival.
BREAKERS (Book 1)
In New York, Walt Lawson is about to lose his girlfriend Vanessa. In Los Angeles, Raymond and Mia James are about to lose their house. Within days, none of it will matter. A plague tears across the world, reducing New York to an open grave and LA to a chaotic wilderness of violence and fires. Civilization comes to an abrupt stop.
Just as the survivors begin to adapt to the aftermath, Walt learns the virus that ended humanity wasn’t created by humans. It was inflicted from outside. The colonists who sent it are ready to finish the job–and Earth’s survivors may be too few and too weak to resist.
MELT DOWN (Book 2)
In upstate Idaho, Ness Hook is run out of his mom’s house by his bullying brother Shawn. In Redding, California, Tristan Carter is graduating college, but with no job and no prospects, she’ll have to move back in with her parents.
Then the world ends: first with a virus, then with an alien invasion.
Ness and Shawn take to the mountains to fight a guerrilla against the attackers. In California, Tristan and Alden are taken prisoner. Separated from her brother, Tristan crosses the ruins of America to track him down. She will stop at nothing to get Alden back–but her fellow survivors prove even more dangerous than the monsters who broke the world.
KNIFEPOINT (Book 3)
Raina was just a girl when the plague came. She survived. Her parents didn’t. Neither did the world. As civilization fell, she took to the ruins of Los Angeles, eating whatever she could catch.
After two years alone, she’s found and adopted by a fisherman and his wife. Their makeshift family lives a quiet life–until a man named Karslaw sails in from Catalina Island with an army of conquerors. Driven by visions of empire, he executes Raina’s new father as a traitor and takes her mother captive.
But Karslaw’s people aren’t the only ones vying for control of the ruined land. As violence wracks the city, Raina joins a rebellion against Karslaw’s rule. She will stop at nothing to free her mother–and to have her revenge.

When an EMP produced by a massive solar flare fries the electrical grid, Captain Jordan Hughes’ problems are just starting. Stranded far from home with a now-priceless cargo of fuel and a restless crew, Hughes weighs his options as violence worsens ashore and the world crumbles around the secure haven of his ship, the Pecos Trader.
‘Wait and see,’ isn’t an option. Hughes must get his ship and crew home — but FEMA arrives with other plans.
Resisting an increasingly corrupt and self-serving federal bureaucracy, Hughes leads a hastily formed and ragtag little band of sailors, preppers, and dissident military personnel on a desperate voyage to reunite them all with home and family – only to find their real journey is just beginning.
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
I’m a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction. As a kid I devoured classics like The Earth Abides and Alas, Babylon, and still enjoy a convincing, post-apocalyptic yarn. However, I never attempted to write one, because the key word is ‘convincing,’ and I doubted my ability to convince readers to take that journey.
You see, my previous work is set in environments I know well and didn’t have to research much, but when research was needed, I was obsessive. Before I can convince you, I have to convince myself the scenarios I plot out are possible, and that requires a good command of the facts. Skeptic that I am, I wasn’t sure research would get me to that point in regard to ‘collapse’ scenarios. Boy, was I wrong!
I found credible source after credible source addressing the vulnerability of our aging power grid. National Geographic produced multiple articles and documentaries on solar storms’ potential to do lasting damage. Government agencies have also issued reports, all with the similar conclusions, and companies such as the venerable British insurer Lloyd’s support that view. In fact, one recent Lloyd’s report states:
“As the electric infrastructure ages and we become more and more dependent on it, risk of a catastrophic outage increases with each peak of the solar cycle. Our society is increasingly dependent on electricity. The potential for long-term, widespread power outages, makes the hazard posed by geomagnetic storms one of the most significant.”
So having convinced myself, I knew I could convince my readers.
But that wasn’t all there was to it, because I didn’t want to write just another post-apocalyptic tale. I therefore focused on characters caught unprepared by the ‘event,’ and forced to survive by their wits. While there is an experienced ‘prepper’ family in the tale, you won’t find overly-specific details of weaponry or long lists of needed supplies. What you will find are believable characters, acting and reacting, sometimes cowardly, sometimes heroically, but always I hope, realistically.
Excerpts From Amazon Reviews (See full text in Reviews section)
One of the better post-apocalyptic books of late. The author’s credible knowledge of military and maritime ops and prepper scenarios combine to create a believable tale. In the bleak and believable future of a post-apocalyptic world created by the EMP from a coronal mass ejection (CME), the reader cheers on the protagonists, and wishes the worst on a bevy of villains. I would suggest this book to any fans of the post-apocalyptic genre. – Boscowashisnamo
Post-apocalyptic fiction done well is a true pleasure, and McDermott is firmly in the upper echelon of post-apocalyptic writers. The possibility of an EMP spawned by a solar event wreaking havoc in technology-heavy environments is well-documented, and McDermott tells a story of believable people doing their best in a terrible situation. — Finback
Meet Emma Grayson, heroine of The Grayson Trilogy, a series of mysterious and romantic adventure stories.
‘The gun continued to be levelled at me. “Answer it…but don’t tell him I’m here or he’ll get to listen to you die.” That concentrated my mind considerably, and as I reached for my phone I came up with a plan…’
Emma Grayson was left devastated when her life was torn apart by tragedy and betrayal. Now someone believes it’s time for her to start again and puts an advert for a job through her door which leads her to the Melton Estate. Despite her desire for a solitary existence she finds herself discovering a life she could never have imagined, challenging her independence, her fears and her resistance to love.
‘An entertaining romance with a fascinating twist. Highly recommended and a RED RIBBON winner.’ The Wishing Shelf Awards
“This is Safe Haven. We offer food, shelter, and protection to all survivors. Does anyone copy? …hello? Is anyone alive out there?”
“The end of the world has given us a harsh, merciless existence, where nature tries hard to push humanity to the very brink of extinction. Everything is against us, between us. Untold miles of lawless, apocalyptic roads wait for our feet, and the future, cold and dark, offers little comfort. Without change, there can be no peace. Only survivors.”
Fated to lead New America, seven gifted people survive an apocalypse only to find themselves on a cross-country quest through horrors that will shake the very core of who they believed they were. These long-denied protectors of humanity are destined to rebuild their country, if they can stay alive long enough to find each other.

A hero you will love, even as you ponder the secrets that could cost him leadership.
